Swing Dancing

The Laguna Middle School 8th graders have started a new unit in Physical Education. Swing dancing is a western dance that involves many individual couples. The unit is two weeks long and many are dreading the time. One eighth grader, who would like to remain anonymous, stated "I will never get these two weeks of my life back. What a waste." Both boys and girls choose their opposite gender partner creating awkward moments. In many cases, classes have more girls than boys, which results in the extra girls dancing behind a couple but with a ghost. Those lucky enough to snag partners are bombarded with either chats or silence. Teachers walk around correcting your form and staring you down.

Teachers become strict and snappy as they correct mistakes over and over every period. One student witnessed a teacher talking to a student in front of the class, causing the student to cry. Teachers also use "volunteers" to demonstrate old or new moves. Recently two students in a row where heard telling the teacher "no" when asked to dance with him. The teacher eventually used the aide of the class because no one wanted to dance with him. I wonder what will happen with a week to go?

Mousetrap Cars

On February 11, 2015 an 8th grade student walks into 4th period Science with his/her mousetrap car. Worries spread; "Will my car work?", "I hope it doesn't fall apart!", and finally "Why did I wait till the last minute?". You slide into your seat and start on the warm up. Then before you know it, it is time for the mousetrap car testing. You watch anxiously as other cars go backwards, don't move at all, go a couple of inches forward, go only the required distance, and then those that go the length of the classroom.

This is the feeling of most 8th graders around the time of the mousetrap car due date. I mousetrap car is a homemade car that is powered by a single mouse trap. When the trap snaps it pulls on the back axle to spin, this makes the wheels turn.

Mousetrap cars are a popular assignment given in physics classes and help students build problem solving skills, learn about energy efficiency, and to never procrastinate.

Many students procrastinated on their projects though hopefully they learned their lesson when there car didn't work right. Today, February 12, 2015, is the day of the mousetrap car derby where the cars will be judged for the longest distance, the fastest, and the cutest. Good luck to all and may the best car win.

How Long Will Cristiano Ronaldo Last

World wide soccer star, Cristiano Ronaldo, celebrated his 30th birthday on February 5. He was named fittest man alive by the Men's Health last summer though many question how long this will last. Coaches worry about a rapid decrease in physical health ahead for Ronaldo. Most pro soccer teams sign players for one year but Cristiano Ronaldo was an exception. Real Madrid's contract ends in 2018 and with three years left they don't want to burden themselves. The buyout cost is around 1 billion euros.

Hope Solo Suspended

Hope Solo sits in the car with her husband who is driving. Police pull over their car suspecting they were driving under the influence. Jerramy Stevens, her husband, refuses to let the officers smell his breath and was taken to the police station for blood tests. Solo disrespectfully argued and resisted the police. Nearly arrested, Solo returned to the hotel. Where the U.S. National Women's Team is staying. The unbeknownst Coach and teammates found out when the story was broadcasted on the news.

Hope Solo's coach, Jill Ellis, states, "During our current National Team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates." Solo, the U.S. women's prized goalie, was consequently suspended for thirty days and will not be able to participate in the World Cup kick off in June. Many wonder how the team will do without their star goalie.

In the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, Hope won her second consecutive Olympic medal after blocking 12 of the 13 shots from the Japanese women’s team. She also holds the U.S. record for most career shutouts and also received the Golden Glove award in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Leaving her teammates hanging as they face the World Cup warm ups without their star goalie has many hoping that the guilt of letting down her teammates will knock some sense back into Solo.

Hope Solo writes; "I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me. I think it's best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team."

Hope Solo, the star in the goalie world, will be missed by her team and many fans this World Cup warm up.

European Soccer Player Moves To The US

Liverpool's captain, Steven Gerrard, has confirmed his move to the US to join the LA Galaxy team. Signing  onto their 18 month contract will make him one of the highest paid MLS players at about 9 million dollars. That is $76,000 weekly. LA Galaxy's striker Landon Donovan, 32, has recently retired allowing an opening for a new scorer and Gerrard fit the bill. He has won the Uefa Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and two Uefa Super Cups among many other accomplishments. Liverpool is losing their top scorer for this season and will have trouble replacing him.

Reactions to his move have been varied; Liverpool fans say that Gerrard was falling in skill at age 34 and was finding it hard to keep up. But his former team mate Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) tweets "If Gerrard was one of the new signings at 24 we'd be raving about him but we judge him at 34 against himself at his peak." Others say that he is still going strong for a 34 year old striker and will be missed. Charlie Austin, striker for Queens Park Rangers team, tweets "How can Liverpool let this man go?" Though despite both of these claims he has not been able to play like he did 10 years ago but still scored more goals this season than Manchester United's forwards Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. He will be a welcomed addition to the LA Galaxy.
